The 'Stute

3 October – 9 November 2014

The 'Stute is Cardiff Contemporary's own institute, an echo of the Miners’ Institutes that once stood at the centre of almost every large mining community in South Wales.  The ‘Stute is our festival’s social centre; it is a public space, a gallery, a library, a meeting place, a reading room, a games room, an information point, and a conversation. The ‘Stute will host a series of events, activities and projects, including Making Conversation on Tuesday evenings between 6:30pm and 9pm, and Warp's Saturday morning Breakfast Club, between 9:30am and  11am.

Featured artists include Jemima Brown and Nicky Wire.

The Library was the focal point of each Miners’ Institute and our ‘Stute hosts a varied collection of reading material in its library.  Cardiff Contemporary artists have each put forward a publication connected to their practice; The Public Zine Library, an ongoing project from the Collaborative Research Group, has toured to us from Margate; we’re hosting a curated selection of publications from Good Press, a bookshop and gallery based in Glasgow; X Marks The Bökship has lent us the XARCHIVE, a collection of books launched at X Marks the Bökship in London; Warp has shared a curated selection from the Warp Library in g39, Cardiff; and The South Wales Miners’ Library has curated a selection of books and materials from their archive in Swansea.
