Bedazzled – A Welshman in New York
29 October – 1 November 2014
Ffotogallery presents Bedazzled, a celebration of the special relationship Dylan Thomas had with the United States (New York in particular), and the enduring influence of his life and work on both sides of the Atlantic. In a series of live performances/installations, audience members are transported back to the 1950s world of bohemian New York where Dylan Thomas' charisma and dramatic and lyrical use of language left all around him spellbound.
Conceived by artistic director/curator David Drake, writer Ben Gwalchmai and composer John Rea.
As Ffotogallery's contribution to the Dylan Thomas 100 festival, Bedazzled: A Welshman in New York celebrates the special relationship Dylan Thomas had with the United States. In a stand-alone structure in a disused Cardiff building, specially designed by architect/designer Rhys Meyrick, there will be a series of presentations between October 29 and November 1 're-imaging' his favourite watering hole The White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village. Audience members will be transported back to the heady bohemian world of New York in the early 1950s where Dylan Thomas' charisma and dramatic and lyrical use of language left all around him spellbound. Live performances incorporating moving image and sound and the accompanying virtual tavern (www.bedazzledinnewyork.org) provide a glimpse into Dylan Thomas' life in New York and the surrounding cultural milieu.
Established in 1978, Ffotogallery has been the major force for photography and lens-based media in Wales for over 30 years. We are widely recognised for promoting contemporary debate and acting as a catalyst for new developments in British and international photographic art. As a national organisation, our view is outward looking, with an exhibition programme featuring artists from Wales and the rest of the world. Ffotogallery seeks to widen its impact and influence through touring exhibitions, collaborations with other organisations and galleries, print and online publishing and an extensive education and outreach programme.
